The Failure of Abstinence

Some time ago I read an article in a Playboy magazine about purity pledges. I was surfing the net today and found another article about the same thing. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/28/AR2008122801588.html?hpid=topnews
The policy of the Bush administration has been to help the funding of public schools that have an “abstinence only” sex education policy. Now after some investigation we have come to know that the so called “education” of abstinence has had some effect. The effect is that there are more kids having unprotected sex! If it wasn’t so damn tragic it would be hilarious. The object of abstinence education was to reduce the amount of teen pregnancies and teens with STD’s. It didn’t just fail; it actually increased the amount of pregnancies and STD’s. Try to understand this for a moment; if kids don’t know how to use a condom, they won’t or fail at an attempt. That is just a fact. And no amount of begging, pleading and coercing our young adults into “purity pledges” will change it.

I certainly hope that the Obama administration will end this kind of laughably dramatic attempt to help our kids.
